mafi is an Austrian family-run business that has, over the last 100 years, gone from being a sawmill, to a wooden ceiling production plant, to a natural wooden floor manufacturer. Its art has always been to develop distinct shapes borrowed from nature. For mafi, the step from a floor to a piece of furniture equates to the transformation between a surface and a narrow space, as well as the shift from the two-dimensional to the three-dimensional. However, this also goes hand-in-hand with the company making its materials more tangible and turning the correlation between wood and design into something that you really can see and feel.
The idea of SR5Q4 is to create a piece of furniture which allows the consumer to experience true individuality. A shelf, although theoretically infinite, is nevertheless self-contained and features an echoing design. The design is cubic in shape and, at the same time, plays around with imperfection at the edges. As a counterpart to the naturally grown structure of the wood, the checked pattern takes clear lines and re-flects the furniture’s own unique shape.
