Preliminary Objects – The Rug

by Stefan Auberg

Stefan Auberg founded his design studio right after graduating from the Gerrit Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam (NL) in August 2014. The focal point of his design practice is an anthropological analysis of design objects in our society. The work varies from one-off pieces, prototypes and specially built objects for exhibition purposes only, to finalised products.

Furniture has identity-building characteristics that are similar to clothes and hairstyle. The industry tries to appeal to the consumers’ urge to be unique with “customisable” products, mostly by selling empty promises. With the help of a hair trimmer, everyone can personalise Auberg’s rug and make it more representative of themselves. By trimming the rug, the underlying layers of colour are revealed, and the consumers can let their creativity run wild.
